I have decided to try my hand at compiling the club news letter. I have never
done anything like this before, but will do my best to produce something monthly
within the available time I have. The new name for the letter is “The
FreeWheeler”. Any material for the letter should be emailed for the January edition, please submit before Friday
December 21st. I look forward to hearing from you! Julia Ertner, thefreewheeler

Ken Plats on the ECCA 12 hour time trial which he won (Photo by David Jones) |
Cambridge CC member Ken Platts won the Eastern Counties Cycling Association 12 Hour time trial. Ken cycled a breath-taking 282.9 Miles over the 12 hour race. This is the 2nd fastest '12' in the whole country this year. His ride impressive because not only did he win the event, he is the overall VTTA Champion over 12 hours and also is the VTTA Champion for his age category (50-59 years). These are some of the other records that Dr Platts, a lecturer with the University of Cambridge, took along the way.
Cambridge CC 's Annual General Meeting (AGM) will take place on Monday 12th November, 7-9pm, the place is Christ Church Hall, Christchurch Street, (off Maids Causeway) CB1 1HT. Agenda and motions to be published in due course. If you want to propose a motion, please contact Chris Adams.
You may have been wondering where your news letter has got to. As you will have seen, Phil Mynot did a fantastic job and produced an attractive and informative newsletter. However, Phil has felt it necessary to resign from the post. I am currently putting together a rough and ready stand-in copy that will be sent out at the end of August. The committee is looking for a volunteer (or two) to act as newsletter editor. If you would like the job please let a committee member know and/or discuss with me. On the 23rd September the Cambridge CTC is organising a 100km Audax. This is the umpteenth year this has been run and it is a bit of a tradition that the clubruns join in with the audax. Details of the ride can be found here. If you wish to ride than please pre-enter as it makes the organiser's life on the day a bit easier. I will go to Addenbrooke's at 0900h on the day and lead a group to Hauxton for the start of the Audax at 1000h. Terry Dickerson.
Starting as from June 3rd there will be a "Sunday School Ride" which will depart Addenbrooke's bus interchange at 8am every Sunday. Club runs captain Sue Taylor is aiming this a club members who need to be back home with the family late morning. Route, distance and speed to be dictated by participants on the day there will be no designated leader at present. It is hoped that it will help, among others, those members with young families whom wish to enjoy a Sunday Cycle but also obliged to put family first. All other runs will remain as 9am start. The club runs introductory rides during the summer months. These start at 10am on the first Saturday of the month starting at Addenbrooke's. The aim is to cover 35-40 miles in about 4 hours - a cafe stop is included. I'd also recommend bringing a few pennies for the cafe stop, spare tube, puncture repair kit, tyre levers, mini pump and a water bottle. Your bike should be one that you are happy to sit on for four hours! Mountain bikes are fine. Chris Adams.
The local road racing season starts this weekend with the first of the Eastern Road Race League events. This is the first of over 20 races in the ERRL this year. Follow the exploits of the Cambridge CC riders through the ERRL website (www.errl.org.uk) and in the Chainletter. The Time Trialing season is also starting as well as the Chainletter the TT results can be found on the Cycling Time Trials website (www.ctt.org.uk).

Membership for the year 2006 has just closed (including the
2-month grace period for rejoining). At the end of February the total for 2006
[2005] membership were: Total=225 [183], First Claim = 190 [144]; Second Claim
14 [16]; Other = 21 [23]. The Graph below illustrates the membership growth
over the last 10 years and particularly illustrates a huge jump in membership
over the last year. Terry Dickerson.
The Cambridge CC reliability rides will take place on 11th (50 mile), 18th (75 mile and 100km) and 25th (90mile) February. Please note these are not normal clubruns and tend to be faster and more competitive. On all of these dates there are normal clubrun alternatives. See here for full details Terry Dickerson
Many thanks to the 100+ members that have joined or rejoined Cambridge CC for the 2007 season. If you have not already and you intend to rejoin, please do so before the end of February (when membership lapses). Else let me know if you are not going to rejoin and the reason. Also I have started distributing 2007 membership cards, please approach me if you think you should have one. Terry Dickerson, terry@leygrove.freeserve.co.uk.
On Sunday 21st of January I counted over sixty riders that met for the clubruns. That so many people want to come out with us is fantastic. However, there are dangers because the groups of riders are so large. I put some guidance notes on this sit some time ago and I thought it was worthwhile bring them to your attention again. Click here for the Group Riding Guide. Terry Dickerson.
