Happy New Year to all Cambridge CC members and their families. Gazing into my crystal ball, I predict that in 2006 Cambridge CC will see:

Well actually James had climbed the hill first. James took first place with a course record in the CC Sudbury open hill climb which took place on 6th November. James had also won the ECCA hill climb championship a few weeks earlier and came a creditable 28th in the National Hill Climb Championship (despite suffering the end of a lingering cold). Well done James. James' ride got a mention in the Bury St Edmunds Today, click to jump to the article.
The road race team have found themselves in the spotlight because of their runaway success in the ERRL. However, sterling work has been done by the time trialists (also see the article on James Ward below). The SPOCO East is a sporting courses TT completion. Overall Cambridge CC riders notched-up several good placings. Congratulations to Peter Baumber who not only defended his title in the King Vet category but also improved on his 2004 points total finishing with 584 points. Duncan Murphy entered for the first time this season and finished second in the senior category with 701 points behind the winner Glen Taylor (718 points). See the results here. Congratulations to both riders.

The annual dinner will be held at Bourn Golf Club on Saturday December 3rd: £18.95 gets you a starter (6 choices), main course (5 choices), yummy dessert, followed by mince pies, coffee and mints. This is the social event of the year- not to be missed! More details will be posted later, but make sure you reserve this time as last year we ran out of places. Booking form is now available, please book as soon as possible, places are limited. Our official VIP guest will be Max Pendleton, father and mentor to world champion Victoria Pendleton. We are hoping that Victoria will also be able to attend, but this depends on her racing commitments. I also understand that Helen is arranging some special surprises. Please book your tickets soon, this really helps Helen with the organisation. Also remember that last year we ran out of tickets and some people were disappointed. Click for the booking form.
The club's AGM will take place on Monday 7th November 7.30-9.30pm at Hills Road College. Further details in the next newsletter. Please send agenda items to Chris Adams by 7th October 2005. The directions to the college can be found here.

It is with shock and sadness that we announce the sudden death of Richard Holmes, at the age of only 41. Although Richard had not been a member for some years, he was a friend to the club and many of its members; for example he gave his time to be the Club's motorbike marshal in the Ike Saul Road Race in April this year and in preceding years. Go here for more tributes. Our condolences to his family and friends, he will be missed. The funeral will be on the 8th September at 3.45pm at Bury St Edmonds (Risby) Crematorium.
Summer Social No. 2 (Posted: 14th
August 2005)
Due to the success of the Club BBQ in June, I've organised another one
on Wednesday 24th August 7.30pm at The Cambridge Blue pub, Gwydir Street
(off Mill Road). As before it's £6.50 per mouth - for that you get a
burger AND a sausage (meat or veggie) AND lots of salads AND an evening in
the company of your friendly club mates in a sunny beer garden*. Please give me your £6.50 in cash or a cheque to 'Cambridge cycling
club' by Sunday 21st at the latest - and your preference for carnivorous or
veggie burger/sos. I will be on the club runs the next few weeks. If
anyone would like to lead a short sociable ride beforehand let me know (further
details to follow)!

Cambridge CC Races to Success - Still (Posted: 30th
July 2005)
The road race team continues its success in the Eastern Road Race
League (www.errl.org.uk)
with the top two individuals (Digby Symons and Dan Staite) and the best team. See
the ERRL website for all the details.
London-Edinburgh-London (Posted: 30th July 2005)
Cambridge
CC member Nick Jackson has recently competed the grueling LEL audax. This ride
is 1400km and four days long and is one of the worlds most difficult (if
not the most difficult) audax. despite breaking a crank and bottom
bracket, he finished in less then 100hours. A few days later Nick could be seen
riding in a CCC evening time trial - what a nutter. ;-)
AUDAX UK Member? (Posted: 27th
May 2005)
Did you know that for completing Audaxes of 200km or
greater, points are allocated to you. If you declare Cambridge CC as your cycling
club, these points can be totaled-up on a 'club' basis. On the Audax UK website
the totals for all clubs are listed. There are no prizes, this is just a bit
of friendly fun. After being in the top ten clubs (out of 200+ clubs) in
2004, Cambridge CC is now languishing in about
40th position. So if you are an Audax UK member, why not register Cambridge
CC as you club. Change your membership details, including club, by going here;
you will need your membership number and password.
Return of the End of Hibernation 200 (Posted: 7th
May 2005)
With the Cambridge-York-Cambridge (600km Audax, 2nd
July) fast approaching and considering
that I have the hall hired for the whole weekend, I have decided to put
on a 200k on the Saturday in addition to the main event. The details will be
going on the AUK website soon but look out for the Hard Times Revisited 200 Sat
2nd July 08.00 start. If you don't fancy the long trek to York and back why
not do the 200 instead and be home for supper. The route will be the same as the End
of Hibernation 200 in March, but it should have a much more
summery ambiance. Event
and entry details. Why not start training?

Midsummer(ish) Cycling Club Social (Posted: 29th
May 2005, 10th June 2005)
Tuesday 14th June from 7.45pm
onwards, BBQ @ The Cambridge Blue, Gwydir Street, £6.50 per
head (burger, sausage and salads + veggie option). The plan is to go
for a shortish evening ride first. Both a B and C ride will set off at
6pm from Addenbrooke's. You don't have to come on the ride
to earn your burger (but the rest of us will make you feel guilty....!)
I need to know numbers for the BBQ by Sunday 5th June, please let me know: carnivore or herbivore and
supply
£5 deposit by 5th June

Getting on Track (Posted: 24th
May 2005)
On either Saturday 4th or 11th June we can book Welwyn Track for 2 to 3 hours. This is not just open to
road racers, anybody who can ride in a group is welcome, the session will be suitable for everybody and can be as easy
or as hard as the individual wants.
The cost is £35 per hour, if we book it for
3 hours and get 20 riders that's only about a fiver
each. The more who go the cheaper it is. Track bikes
will be £3 each to hire for the session, they have either Look pedals or clips
and straps, they are not too keen on people changing
the pedals. If you would like to have a go, please let me know asap so that I
can books the track.

Cambridge CC Races to Success (Posted: 5th
May 2005)
The road race team have had a lot of success over the
last few months. Currently the Cambridge CC team leads the Eastern Road Race
League (see www.errl.org.uk for details)
with both the individual best points scorer (Digby Symons) and the best team.
Both Dan Staite and Douglass Bradshaw have scored wins (Douglass two, including
a win in the clubs own promotion, the Ike Saul Road Race, see below). I
gather the team has been riding as such and we should not forget the other team
members who have contributed to the headline successes. Early in the year Cambridge
CC member Steve Hubbard (not Cotton as previously reported) also won a road race at his first attempt after a break
of some fifteen years!
The road team have been doing a fantastic job,
but we should also congratulate the time trialists for wining a number of events
and taking the team prizes in even more. There are too many names to mention
them all, but keep an eye on the message
board, the CTT website and in Cycling
Weekly.

The Ike Saul Road Race (Posted: 5th May 2005)
This road race was promoted by Cambridge CC, Digby
Symons being the organiser. Apart from a couple of crashes, I gather the whole
event went off really well. Some forty members and friends of the club
turned out to help run the event and I am sure all of the riders appreciated
the efforts of these unpaid volunteers.
As far as the race results were concerned,
it was also a spectacular success for the club, with Douglas Bradshaw winning
and Digby Symons and Dan Staite taking 3rd and 4th respectively. A write-up
of the event was put into the latest newsletter, and a summary can be found
here and the results here.
2005 Membership Cards are Available (Posted: 5th
March 2005, modified 5th May 2005)
The 2005 membership cards have been produced. I will
distribute them at:
The remaining ones I will have put into the April May
newsletter.

Cambridge CC Audax (Posted: 13th February 2005)
A
200km Audax is to be run by Cambridge CC Member Lucy McTaggart on Sunday 13th
March 2005. The Audax starts from Hauxton, about 4 miles southwest of Cambridge.
Details and an entry form can be found on the excellent Audax UK website;
its name is the "End of Hibernation 200". If you have done or plan
to do the 50, 75 and 90mile reliability rides, this makes an interesting
extra challenge. Lucy has started a Scottish section of Cambridge CC, so do
not worry about the postal address for the entry! Lucy is also away on holiday
(honeymoon) until the 6th March so entry confirmation and rout sheet will be
sent the week before the Audax. If you cannot ride, I am sure Lucy could do
with some help on the day.
Club Races in 2005 (Posted: 1st February 2005)
The
club time trials and the open races have been posted under the Local Races button
to the right. Please note, due to the popularity of the club and the evening
time trials, it is likely that a priority system for riding will have to be
put in place. The details have to be worked out but Cambridge CC members will
get priority in the events (except the "come and try it" events).
Road Racing in 2005 (Posted: 1st February
2005, modified 13th Feb 2005)
Well
it would seem that there is quite a bit of interest. in road racing this year. There
are at least a dozen
keen riders who are participating in training rides with a view to getting fit
and riding road races, particularly the Essex Eastern
Road Race League (ERRL) as a proper team.
Not only that, but quite a few of the team are really quite good riders. Watch
out for the results. To help coordinate the team activities a road race specific
message board has been setup. The message board can be accessed through the
button to right (at the top of the panel); you will need to be a first claim
member of Cambridge CC and register at the site.
Membership 2004: Up-date (Posted: 6th Jan 2005,
modified 1st February 2005
and 22nd Feb 2005)
At
the end of 2004, Cambridge Cycling Club had 164 members, 123 of which were first
claim. By way of comparison, at the end of 2003 were 145 and 103 respectively.
A good year for membership! Click here
to see how the membership has changed over the last ten years; the dip
in 2001 was associated with the Foot & Mouth epidemic. Update
- at the end of January the club had 177 members. Updated-update
- as of 22nd
February January 185 members.
A New Cycling Year (Posted: 1st Jan 2005)

or starting the Tour de France. Whatever your cycling interests,
I hope that rejoining (or joining) Cambridge Cycling Club will be high on your
priority list. Yes the new membership year starts on the first of January. Go
